Donut Plan

It's difficult to encourage people who are overweight to train like a fitness model. However, if you search for a fitness app, you'll usually find trainers with "perfect" bodies doing hard workouts. People feel embarrassed and lose confidence if they can not finish an entry level workout, and end up never doing this again.

Search "fitness" in the app store, you'll find those...

"Muscles"
"Perfect shape"
"Training plans"
"Challenges"


However, according to WHO...

39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2016, and 13% were obese.

According to a fitness model...

“I probably exercised more than an hour per day 6-7 days per week.”

Insight


Many people’s figures are not even close to the fitness model. If you don’t exercise that hard, you’ll never be like them.

How to encourage people who have an inactive lifestyle to keep fit in a more attainable way?

I interviewed some friends in order to know about their experience of fitness training. Some have pretty much experience while some very little. Most of them are students or office workers.

QUOTES:

“I couldn’t finish a workout. I felt miserable and gave up then.”

“I don’t have stong willpower to train myself at home.”

“I had workout plans. It always works well at first. But sometimes I’m busy or just tired. I passed one session, then I passed two...”

“It’s tiring. I can find a thousand reasons not to do the exercise.”

Affinity Mapping


Findings:

Starters or students with low budget or people with very inactive lifestyle would like to use workout app.

People don’t like too many choices of workouts which make it difficult to start.

Experienced people would rather do training in a gym, unless there’s no affordable gym nearby.

People don’t like to receive notifications. They either have fixed plans (eg. doing yoga at 4 p.m. every Saturday) or need very flexible plans.
